| The Donahower House was designed and built in 1873 by E.P. Bassford for Frederick A. Donahower, a prominent citizen and banker. When it was built, the newspaper reported that there was hot and cold running water, all possible cooking and washing conveniences, making it the best equipped, most modern home in the city. The house was built with the finest materials available at the time. The style is Italianate, and includes many vertical elements, like the carved and turned balusters on the porch and balcony railings. The wide and lavishly decorated molded columns are crowned with a high-profiled and often painted brackets. An open stairway graces the front hall, with a landing half way up that leads in two different directions. Of historic interest, there is also a cyclone cellar. Mr. Donahower lived in the house until 1928. The house was used later as a nursing home, a Baptist Church, and a private residence before its current incarnation as an inn. Located on a spacious corner lot at the southern end of St. Peter's main business boulevard, it is one of the most visually distinctive homes in the city. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Homes in 1983. |

| Frederick A. Donahower and his family moved to St. Peter, Minnesota in 1857,where he founded a private bank, the first in St. Peter. In 1871, Donahower and two other private bankers organized First National Bank. He was appointed cashier, a post he held until he was selected as president in 1889. His strong presence and leadership lent strength and stability to the financial institution he founded, such that his bank was not shaken by the financial panics in 1857, 1873, 1893 and 1907. The editor of the St. Peter herald recalled that during that last crisis, "the bank's cash and deposits actually increased, and under his guidance it was never troubled by a crisis." The editor also noted that "the bank inspired the confidence of the people of the community." He worked at his bank until his retirement in 1914. Mr. Donahower had a long history of service to his community. He was a member of the Episcopal Church, and was influential in the construction of the attractive paris that stands today. He was an elected County Commisioner of Nicollet County and served as Chairman of the Board. He also sat on the City Council and the School Board. |
